Often times in life when one faces a certain amount of of recurring troubles their fate begins to stumble and the history of generation can sometimes be questioned. Junot Diaz's "The Brief And Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" is a modern fictional example. Diaz creates a heart warming yet disastrously tone explaining the lifetime of devastation Oscar Wao faces when cursed with fuku. The author illuminates meaning as a whole by producing a character that is victimized in various situations creating a new principle or role of the character. Diaz describes oscar stating"in those blessed days of his youth oscar was something of a casanova, one of those pre school lover boys who was always trying to kiss girls and pelvic bump any chance he got.. however oscar couldn't have passed for normal if he wanted to (Diaz 55)." the description of oscar can be correlated back to oscar lifetime goal which was to be more masculine so that in return he could once be loved. However in search of love and pressure of fuku oscar makes his final voyage to Santa Domingo where he dies. Before the death of oscar he states "they would sense him waiting for him on the other side and over there he wouldn't no fat boy or dork kid no girl had ever loved; over there he'd be a hero, an avenger. Because anything you can dream (he put his hands up) you can be (Diaz 321). Oscars speech is an indicative of his status as a hero. As not only the climax of the novel but also as a completion to what oscar has been striving for. In death oscar is able to be on the other side where all his dreams are fulfilled. Putting his hands up is an act of surrender as well as gesture of power. His surrender of his own death is what gives him power. Diaz now then illuminates oscar as a hero because of what he took from every challenge stating "So this is what everybody’s always talking about! Diablo! If only I’d known. The beauty! The beauty!" (Diaz 335). The book closes with these words, leaving the reader with a positive exclamation despite all of the curse and negative space that fill the novel Oscar’s claim has the opposite emotion instead of horror at all of the awful things that have occurred in his family and his nation’s history, Oscar relishes the beauty of love despite all of the violence. Love has been the driving force throughout the novel it is the means and the end for almost every character.
